M-PAYMENT: A Tool for Financial Inclusion &
Economic Growth
With over 290 million mobile subscribers in Africa, it is now
possible to bring insurance, banking, and micro-finance and
capital market services to people at the Bottom of Pyramid (BoP).
M-PAY Conference & Expo is the only conference that focuses on
all financial services that mobile system can deliver.
M-Banking:
In South Africa, almost twice as many people bank on their cell
phones than on PCs, new research has revealed. In Kenya, over 30%
of the population have either send or receive money through M-Pesa
mobile money services. Balance enquiries and notifications of
transactions are the killer applications in South Africa while
money transfer is the king in Kenya. What would be the killer
applications in Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone? Find out at
M-PAY Africa - Ghana 2010.
M-Insurance:
The state of insurance penetration in Africa is worrisome. Only
12% South African have life insurance. Life insurance penetration
in Nigeria is below 0.5%. However, Africa’s large population and
informal economy indicate potential for huge penetration of the
insurance services if the right distribution and payment channels
are adopted. This is what Metropolitan Life (South Africa),
Orient Insurance (Kenya) and Trustco (Namibia) are doing. They
are using mobile phone channel to provide cheap insurance
services to the BoP. Can these services be replicated across
Africa? Find out at M-PAY Africa - Ghana 2010.
M-Shares Trading:
Trading in shares in most Africa countries is not a cup of tea
even with the automation of some of the markets. Most people
don’t have access to internet, the universal channel for trading.
However, Standard Investment Bank, Kenya, with introduction of
EasyHisa has shown that the BoP can also play the universal game.
Easy Hisa is a new SMS service that allows investors to trade
shares from the comfort of their home or office. Can this service
work in other African countries? Find out at M-PAY Africa - Ghana
2010.
M-Government:
There is a global shift in demand from governmental agencies as
they exploit the ubiquitous nature of SMS. Presently, over twenty
governmental agencies were amongst those in Singapore exploring
how to secure the SMS channel for its activity. Can governments
in Africa also exploit mobile phone technology to enhance its
delivery? Join us at M-PAY Africa - Ghana 2010.
